The relentless rise of energy prices, the cost of installing solar panels at an all-time low and the move toward Electric Vehicles growing momentum, it makes more sense to invest in renewable energy generation. The problem with wind and solar is its intermittent nature. We all know the sun doesn’t shine at night, yet household demand is most commonly realised after the sun goes down. Batteries can store the energy at times of high generation and discharge at times of low generation, effectively time shifting daylight.
The term arbitrage effectively means buying in energy when there is low demand and therefore cheaper and discharging when demand is high. If you’re on an Economy 7 tariff (cheaper rates between 12am & 7am) you can charge your batteries using the cheaper overnight tariff and use the stored energy when you need it. Octopus Energy now offer pricing that changes every half hour going up or down depending on demand. Battery management systems and monitoring are now smart enough to arbitrage energy at the lower rates and discharge when higher.
